9 Healthy Ways to Start Your Day

Whether you’re a morning person or not, our morning routines set the tone for our entire day. As soon as we wake up, we face a whole host of choices. Do we get up as soon as our alarm wakes us and get started on the day, or hit the snooze button and dread the day ahead? If your morning is rushed and stressful, it sets a negative precedent for the entire day. On the other hand, if you spend a little extra time starting your day with intention, you’ll be happier and more productive. Establish a morning routine that includes one or more of these healthy ways to start your day
for a better life!

1. Make Your Bed

Making your bed may seem like a mundane activity, but by completing this simple action you start your day off on a positive and productive note. Plus, living in a clean and organized environment will help you to feel calm and relaxed.

2. Exercise

This is one of our favorite healthy ways to start your day. Morning workouts rev up your metabolism and provide happiness-producing endorphins for your day. Studies have shown that people who work out first thing in the morning are more likely to stick to their exercise plan. Just make sure to pack your gym bag the night before so you don’t have to worry about it in the morning.

Gym not your thing? Start your day with a brisk walk outside or do squats while you brush your teeth. Even 5 minutes of exercise will provide you with feel-good hormones for the rest of the day.

3. Meditate

You don’t even need to leave your bed for this healthy practice! Spend the first 5 to 10 minutes of your day meditating to create a sense of peace throughout the day. There are many different kinds of meditation, including reflective meditation, mindfulness meditation, and creative meditation. Find one that works for you! Alternatively, you can begin a yoga practice to knock out meditation and exercise first thing in the morning.

4. Morning Pages

To get your creative juices flowing, start your day by handwriting 3 pages in a journal. Write your dreams, what you’re grateful for, your intentions for the day – this practice is meant to be a stream of consciousness style and doesn’t necessarily need to make sense to anyone but you. Like meditation, this practice can help bring peace to your day by helping you clear through difficult thoughts, prioritize your day, and come up with new ideas.

5. Avoid Your Phone

It can be tempting to get on your phone first thing in the morning and swipe through all your social media accounts. Unfortunately, switching quickly between different tasks trains your brain to indulge itself with distractions. Over time, this can lead to a decrease in focus. Instead, try an activity that improves your focus, like meditating or reading a book.

6. Treat Yourself

Treating yourself to something special in the morning – whether it be a high quality coffee, a delicious breakfast, or a luxurious moisturizer – will instantly boost your mood going into the day.

7. Have a Glass of Water

This is probably the easiest of all the healthy ways to start your day! After a full night of sleep, we wake up dehydrated. Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning not only rehydrates you, but also revs up your metabolism and eliminates toxins. Add lemon for extra detoxifying power.

8. Spend Time Outdoors

Enjoy your coffee in an outdoor space, or take a walk around the block. Spending time outside is proven to improve your mood, and morning is a great time to fit in outdoor time before we get swept up in our tasks and duties of the day.

9. Prep the Night Before

If you’re struggling to fit in a healthy practice in the morning, do as many things as you can in the evening before you go to bed. Pack your lunch, plan your outfit, make your to-do list – the more you do the night before, the more time you’ll have in the morning for relaxation and focus.

Creating a healthy morning routine will start your day off on a happier and more productive note, leading a better quality of life overall. There are many different healthy ways to start your day, and while it might not be possible to add all these practices to your morning routine, just adding one or two will make your day better.
