This is the Best Sleeping Position for Rest and Comfort

Your sleeping position determines how well you sleep at night. Bad posture can lead to health issues such as impaired circulation, heartburn, headaches, muscle cramping, fatigue, neck pain, digestive problems and even premature signs of aging. Here are the pros and cons of some of the common sleeping positions.

Side Sleeping

This is possibly the most common sleeping position. But sleeping on your side can cause spinal stress. It can even lead to wrinkles since one side of your face is pressed against your pillow. If you must sleep on your side, try putting a pillow between your legs. This will prevent your top leg from resting in front of your body and twisting your spine.

Fetal Position

Sleeping in the fetal position is not the best option as it can restrict breathing in your diaphragm. If you feel sore in the morning, particularly in your back or joints, this position could be the culprit. However, this is a good pose to sleep in if you’re a snorer or pregnant as it improves circulation in your body.  If you sleep in this position, avoid tucking your chin into your chest. Straighten your body out as much as possible and place a pillow between your knees to reduce the strain on your hips.

Sleeping on Your Stomach

This is the worst pose to sleep in when it comes to avoiding back and neck pain. While snorers find that this position helps them breathe easy, its cons definitely outweigh the pros. Sleeping on your stomach makes it difficult to maintain a neutral spine position. It can lead to numbness and pain since it puts unnecessary pressure on muscles and joints. It is best to avoid this pose while sleeping as it can also lead to skin issues, such as wrinkles and acne.

Sleeping on your Back

This is the best position to prevent back and neck pain, reduce acid reflux, and avoid premature wrinkles. However, people who snore can have issues with this sleeping pose.

When you sleep on your back, your head, neck, and spine stay in a neutral position. Your back stays straight without any unnatural curves forced into it. As your head is elevated, your stomach is below your esophagus, which prevents acid reflux. Since nothing is pressed against your face, back-sleeping also helps keep wrinkles at bay.

Try experimenting with each position for a few nights and see which works best for you. Irrespective of the health benefits you’ll normally wake up in the position that your body is most comfortable in. When it comes to your posture, it’s best to make small adjustments and do what feels right to get a good night’s sleep.
