Got the Summer Blues? Here’s How to Enjoy Yourself When Everyone Else Has Plans

For a lot of people, the beginning of summer signals planning vacations, heading to the beach, taking in concerts, sipping on cocktails, trying new restaurants, and weekends away with friends. But to others, it can mean feeling uncomfortably hot, sandy clothes, dreaded chafing, and spending money that they don’t have. When you’re low on cash, it can be challenging to know what to do with all the free time you have. Also, it’s easy to give in to peer pressure and say yes to things you don’t really feel like doing, just because your friends are doing them.
If you have the summer blues, you may not be in the mood to max out your credit card this season. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to entertain yourself, that don’t cost a lot of money.

Take in a Free Day at a Museum

Most cities have attractions like zoos and museums that you can enjoy for free or at a minimal charge. You may not have visited one of these since you were in high school, but you’d be surprised at how much fun they can be. If your area doesn’t have free attractions, there are bound to be days when exhibits are open to the public. Many museums offer free admission once a week or charge a “pay what you can” fee. Browsing through your local library is also a great way to spend a lazy summer evening.

Explore Your City

If you can’t join your friends for a vacation this summer, make the most of your time by exploring your town or city. Do some research on nature spots in your area and go for leisurely walks. Most of us don’t realize that there’s so much to do in our own localities and cool things happening right under our noses. You can also explore towns nearby and visit local parks and attractions. You’re bound to come across something that you love doing for a lot less money than booking a weekend trip to Vegas.

Take Up a New Hobby

Picking up a new hobby may be just what you need to spend your summer in a fun and productive way. For instance, learning to play an instrument can be an enjoyable, liberating experience. Exploring a new language can be immensely rewarding as well. You could either invest in an instrument or language lesson or learn almost anything for free by harnessing the power of the internet. Using your free time to learn a new skill is not only fun, but it will also enrich your life in positive ways.

With so many activities in your town or taking up a leisurely activity at home, you will find that it’s easy to find something to do during the summer to keep those blues away.
