‘The Post’ and Female Directors Snubbed at the 2018 BAFTA Awards Nominations

After “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” dominance at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominations for its prestigious awards.

Natalie Dormer and Letita Wright announced the nominees, where Guillermo Del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” lead with 12 nods, including best film, best director, best actress (Sally Hawkins) and best supporting actress (Octavia Spencer). Meanwhile, Darkest Hour and Three Billboards and followed close behind with nine nominations each, including Best Picture and Best British Film.

But with every nominations comes the surprises and the snubs. Among the films that were completely shut out was Steven Spielberg’s “The Post”,
the celebrated drama that follows The Washington Post’s fight to publish the Pentagon Papers in 1971, didn’t received a single nomination.

Also completely left out were female film directors. Dee Rees’ Netflix drama “Mudbound” and Patty Jenkins’ box office hit “Wonder Woman” were ignored in every category. Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” received three nominations, but the writer and director was excluded from the Best Director category. Among the few female filmmakers to receive a nomination was Angelina Jolie. The actress/director was nominated in the foreign-language film category for the wrenching drama “First They Killed My Father”, representing Cambodia.

This same scenario happened at the Golden Globes, which prompted presenter Natalie Portman to say “And here are all the male nominees” before naming the men nominated. Will the same happened during BAFTA’s broadcast? We will have to wait till Feb. 18, when the winner will be announced in the ceremony hosted by Joanna Lumley.

Here is the list of nominees.
