Psychedelic Aromatherapy: Essential Oils for Emotional Well-being

You already know that we’re huge fans of aromatherapy. But recently, we’ve also started to play around with psychedelic aromatherapy. I know that this sounds scary at first. However, all that it refers to is a harmonious blend of aromatics and emotional wellness, all with the help of our beloved essential oils. While it, of course, does not mirror the hallucinogenic effects of traditional psychedelics, it does embrace the emotional responses that certain aromatic compounds within essential oils can evoke. These oils possess nuanced fragrances that stimulate emotions, memories, and mental clarity. And all of that makes them a gentle yet powerful tool for emotional balance.

Psychedelic Aromatherapy 101

At its core, psychedelic aromatherapy is rooted in the belief that aromatic compounds found in essential oils possess the ability to influence our emotions and mental states. Unlike conventional psychedelics, these oils create a subtler but meaningful impact on our psyche, tapping into our limbic system, the emotional center of the brain. While it’s (luckily) nowhere as potent as it would be with actual medication, it still has the power to change and uplift our mood.

Just think about it. Is there one smell that you’re particularly attached to? For me, it’s the smell of vanilla or cinnamon. I associate these smells with comfort, warmth, and safety. They remind me of an evening spent at home baking, the holiday season, or just something cozy and sweet. So, whenever I’m feeling stressed out, these are the smells that have the power to calm me down.

Essential Oils for Emotional Well-being

If you’re not a fan of vanilla or cinnamon, don’t worry. Each essential oil carries its unique aroma and therapeutic properties. Lavender, often hailed as a universal oil, promotes calmness and relaxation. Frankincense, with its earthy scent, offers grounding and a sense of spiritual connection. Ylang-ylang, renowned for its floral notes, instills feelings of joy and sensuality. Patchouli’s earthy aroma provides emotional stability, while bergamot’s citrusy scent uplifts mood and inspires positivity. There’s an oil for anyone out there.

Application Methods

Using essential oils can take various forms, allowing their aromas to influence our emotional landscape. Diffusing oils via diffusers creates an ambient environment that subtly impacts mood. Topical application, through massages or pulse point application, allows for direct absorption and a more personal connection to the oil’s effects. Inhalation methods, either by directly inhaling from the bottle or through steam inhalation, can also be a great way. It’s up to you to play around with different methods and find the one that works the best.

Safety and Considerations

While essential oils are generally safe, we do have to share a few safety considerations too. Dilution is essential to prevent skin irritation or sensitivities. It’s crucial to consult professionals, especially for pregnant or nursing individuals and those with specific medical conditions, before using essential oils. If you have never used essential oils for therapeutic properties before, make sure to start slow. Opt for one or two oils max, and find the ones that work best for you.
